sandbalster
« on: March 08, 2018, 02:32:55 PM »
I have been using a buddies sandblaster and what was suggested was to use glass beads. I'm using a medium bead. It works OK on some stuff but some paint does not come off. What should I use as an all purpose medium? Still want the paint to look good after it's finished. This is for all the small stuff off a bus.

Crushed glass works well and doesn't rough things up too much.

red garnet like 60/80 mix i think is what it's called
decent finish not rough like sand, rougher than glass but not bad at all and will strip paint off

Problem with crushed glass is it breaks down quickly and being a cheap ass, I like it to last a while! The original cost is low though. Just want to be sure when I paint it after blasting, the paint looks good.

Aluminum oxide lasts a long time and isn't too coarse when new, takes off rust great but eats up nozzles in the process. Not cheap, but a little goes a long way.

It really depends on what you are blasting, there really isn't a single media that will cut rust aggressively and not chew up soft metals like aluminum, you'll either have to use fresh glass on the ugly stuff and blast the progressively softer stuff as it wears, or save up batches of parts and swap medias to suit them.

I got some 80 grit garnet. Seems to work well. Only doing steel stuff now. Saving the glass if I do aluminum.
