Sputters, Hesitates But Hasn't Died
« on: August 07, 2003, 12:26:20 AM »
So I rebuilt my carbs two weeks ago - (in a 73 type 3) because my car was sputtering and didn't have any power in the low rpm's and wasn't idling properly.  They worked really well until this sunday it started hesitating from a start and in second - I had a friend check it out and he said it sounded like a valve problem - drove it out to matt's tonight, we did a valve adjustment I took it for a spin and no change - we checked to make sure that I was getting spark everywhere and that is no prob...  so we have come to the conclusion that is a carb issue - however does anyone know if this could be anything else??  oh and driving the car home, I could do 50 mph at the very very most, and the majority of the time it was 30-40 mph ... and I hate driving slow!  starting from a stop just takes forever.....  I think we barely got through a light by the time it turned red again, and I was the only car at the light!!  :(

(matt - the generator light when out as we were driving away so it seems it was the generator...)

Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Run the car and spray some wd40 around the manifold seams and see if the idle changes, if so you have a leak.
Other than that maybe a clogged fuel filter?

James the car will probably be done today or tommorow, cluthch tube is fixed then it goes onto the engine analyzer to find out what jetting has to be done. Im crossing my fingers for air care. Theres only so much I can do if I dont have the equipment. I have done most of the work on it myself. Thank you very much.

Can't you ass hats stop bashing long enough to offer up some advise to a damsel in distress? [_[

Anyway, vacuum leaks and fuel filter don't seem to be the issue. I think we have it narrowed down to a problem with the accelerator pumps so the carbs are coming out and going to Mike (AKA Penguin) tomorrow to have a look and see what we can find.

Did you guys check the jets to see if they might have become clogged?

Is there more than 1 filter? under tank and in motor compartment possibly, rust also could have fallen from inside gas tank into fuel line.

Fuel is getting through the filter (and it's clean) so I'm pretty sure it's the accelerator pumps. The car idles fine but hesitates when you step on the gas.
