Title: Type II's working in Canada
Post by: silas on January 25, 2015, 10:35:57 PM
so, i mentioned in the "canadian national ski team" thread (http://www.airspeedparts.com/forums/index.php?topic=18952.0) that i had found some cool old Volkswagen Canada literature from the '60's about working type II's in Canada. i love the history of these old beasts and seeing how some of them were used in the old days is truly remarkable!

after a little bit of digging i found the same literature in the archives section on thesamba.com. the images below are how they appear in the booklets, there are a few of the same pages used in each book, but i figured i'd include them all anyways so we can keep it complete!

enjoy!!

here is the first one, dated 10/65, and originally from wetmore motors ltd. (an old local dealer)...

For our Family business, we run a 2005 and a 2006 T5. We used to have an early 80's Transporter as w well. I'd love to get an older one to run one for promotion and as my work van. That would be cool, to replace my Transit Connect 240. As I use it more for running from one construction site to the next. Still has plumbing supplies and tools. But not as hard service as it use to be. Now that I do 50% office time and coordination on site. A T2 single or double can truck would be cool with a 3.2l and 915. Ahhhhh dreams. Lol

Thanks Silas, really cool. Maybe we should post up some pics of our vehicles working. I'm looking forward to getting some lumber this summer and popping through the safaris.

Thanks Silas: Terrific vintage photos. I'll guess some of our junior members never knew how common they were on job sites and small businesses back in the day. I went through, 6 Syncros, including Crew cabs, 2 vans, one Tri-star crew cab,(sure miss that one), I raised many an eyebrow on "spring break" mud track" rig roads driving around "planted" American trucks coming in to location in winter climbing "ice road" hills with, again, trucks being winched up. Occasional thumbs up would just bring a huge grin to my face. I'm sure there are still people talking about the "Geos" funny little truck ha ha. No one could believe it was a one ton either. Then came the "replacement" Eurovan and that was the end. Too bad, at least for me. Sure miss those trucks.
Here is that last syncro. I heard it went to Oregon after I sold it locally and there she is still sporting the Bosch flamethrower lights I installed. Factory winch appears to be gone but factory roll bars are still on it.
Ahhhh memories..... Lol

bwaz...those pics are awesome. very cool to see some more local stuff. it's interesting because the fraser bakery is now a very popular spot called breka bakery & cafe, excellent coffee & pastries, same location and i drive by it every day on my way to work. also, there was a buckerfields in courtenay that mom used to take us to all the time! cool stuff!

rockdoc...nice off road truck for sure! i could see it raising some eyebrows!

ya, i figured focussing only on working type II's in canada would pay a great homage to these old work horses and how they were and are used in our glorious country!! we could start a different thread for all logoed buses, but i vote we keep this one as is due to its unique qualities!  :)

This is Oscar the talking police bus. The Saskatoon police service used him for educating kids about safety etc. There would be an officer hidden inside that would provide the voice of Oscar and talk to the kids. They used him during the 70's and 80's and was retired from service sometime in the early 90's I believe. Pretty fond memories of seeing Oscar around the city when I was a youngster.

here's another cool old bdsc found on thesamba.com posted by kintail with the description...

Quote
This '53 Single Cab was owned by John Eschenlohr, VW Canada National Parts Manager. John was there from VW Canada's official start in the late '52 and into the '60s. There is an early Eberspacher gas heater installed under the front seat and a couple of years ago I came across a VW Canada workshop bulletin of the same gas heater personally signed by Mr. Eschenlohr. This original bulletin had to go to Craig Allen of Toronto, who has since completely restored the vehicle, to complete the circle.

here is one i found today that i'm really digging...

1971, vancouver, greyhound bus station at the corner of cambie & dunsmuir. photo by richard watson.

if we zoom in a bit (second pic) we see that that sweet 21 window deluxe has the same logos as the big buses! probably used as a shuttle or maybe for the mystery trips every sunday!! it also appears to be a one colour deluxe...possibly the rare lotus white top & bottom from the factory? or was it painted to match the top colour of the big buses? either way...there is a lot going on in this pic, and thats a cool bus & a cool slice of local history

^^ hard to see, but the blurred images on the right side of the bus match the logos plus the boat on the roof, and it looks like maybe this pic was taken at the same time as the other beach shot above...

It was Brett Walkers single cab, picking up the Porsche for his friend Dave who was involved in Porsche wheeling and dealing. Brett figures the Porsche was quickly flipped, late 1980’s

In 1972 while going to the U of Manitoba, I found a retired  MTS bus in a barn northeast of Winnipeg.  It was fairly rough with beige sides and brown roof.  Belly pans were installed I was told to keep the mud from packing up underneath.  Passed on that one but found a 63 rust free Kombi at the local Datsun dealer a few weeks later.  One owner.  Motor was not great but the price was right -$380.

When searching for MTS VW busses, I found this:

A band bus in and around Winnipeg circa late 60's early 70's.  Very similar to the one I looked at.
