so,,like in my intro i said i was going to ask a buncha dumb questions..here is #1
i was wondering which year bugs came with 1600dp engines..i have a '68 beetle and i have a rebuilt 70's bug engine sitting in my garage..is there away to tell just upon first glance??
#2 will i have any problems if i was to put the '70's bug engine onto the '68's tranny..
#3  what would you suggest a rebuilt '70's bug engine with chrome baha headers,rebuilt carb,new everything,is worth if i was to put it in the classifieds??...
#4in the near future i should replace the frame head on my'68..any hints or anything i should know before take on the job???....thanks guys... :blink:

#1 1971 and later
#2 The top left engine to trans bolt on early cars was intended to be fixed while you turned a nut on from the engine side.  With the larger cooler in 71, they installed a pressed in nut into the case, requiring you to turn the bolt from the trans side.  The 70 and older trans cases are cast so that there's a notch to prevent the bolt head from turning.  To make things easy, you need to grind those notches off to allow the head to turn.

I'll add to Bruce's comments:
#1 1971 and later beetles had dp motors. There is a serial number stamped in the engine block, just below the generator stand. Post it, and somebody will tell you what the motor is out of.
#2 Something else to be aware of... early and late transmissions use different release bearings, and pressure plates.  Make sure your pressure plate is the proper one, for the release bearing in the trans.

Also, 71 only Busses came with a Beetle 1600DP.
