Wheel Cylinders?
« on: May 25, 2006, 11:44:55 AM »
Ok I gots a little problem with my buggy It keeps blowing it's wheel cyliders. Twice now to be exact and I don't know why. They are altrom units and cost me 47 bucks each (most expensive cylinder I've bought) and without excessive pedal pressure they pop and I loose all braking. Keep in mind I'm only running rear brakes the front is to light and lock up what are your guys suggestions this is dangerous and always seems to happen on logging roads

If you are locking up your front wheels, the cure is to alter the F to R brake bias, not to remove the fronts all together.  You can very easily increase the rear bias by installing Super Beetle front wheel cylinders in the rear.

Are your rear brakes adjusted properly?? Maybe they are too far in, and the wheel cyls. are over compensating.

If the shoes are really worn out, and the drums are beyond tolerance, then I suppose it is possible, but they would have to be really out of adjustment/worn.
As far as adjusment goes, you have star adjusters on the bottom of the backing plates that are accessed from the holes in behind. One adjuster per shoe. Run them out 'til the shoe just touches the drum, then back off a couple turns.

68 and later. Also, I've never heard of wheel cylinders \"blowing\", as they are, by the nature of there design, made so the higher the pressure exerted on the cup, the better they seal. Are you sure you don't have an oil-in-the-brakefluid contamination issue? That would be the first thing I'd suspect, since it's happened more than once.

Whats wrong with Altrom?
If more power is better. Then too much is just enough.
Why do it once when you can do it thrice?

Hey Epic,
My own personal feeling is that there is nothing wrong with altrom stuff. I've used it in my bmw and have had not a problem. Just my own pure curiousity what Silas' feeling is.
