12v Flywheel On 6v Crank
« on: October 13, 2004, 05:52:13 PM »
Just sold a guy an engine for his beetle. Its out of a 66 T3 so it's 6V. He's converting it to upright, but needs to put on his 12V flywheel. I can't remember if it's a direct flywheel swap or not. His flywheel should have an o-ring in it, and I know the 6V one didn't. Isn't the 6V crank ground differently on the end? I can't remember for the life of me, so if someone could shed some light on this, it would be great.

6v crank has a longer shoulder . 12v O ring no fit .
check if it's actually a 6v crank. It may not be .

Well it was a 6V engine with a 6v flywheel. So it must have a 6V crank. What are his options, so he can use a 12V flywheel on this engine?

If it's the original 66 motor then it will be 6v crank, but if it ever was changed it may be a later motor and a 6v fly wheel put on . It wll fit
on a 12v crank.  I think I've seen 12v o ring flywheels that have had
the outer lip for the o ring machined out (no more o ring)so that it would fit over the crank.  Never done this so I'm just guessing. And another thing I'm not sure about is if people are using the paper gasket over the dowels
these days or just some kind of sealer goop or ..............?  Guess ya can't go too far wrong with the paper gasket as long as you set your end play with in place.

Anyone else have any ideas ?

There are stock flywheels with the 6v crank end and 200mm 12 ring gears. You just have to search around, I think they came from a Bus.
