Thats was my first try and did not fit and rubbed the spring plate. It's short axle with the re-drilled drums and truck tires 205/70's. I finally have my Type 3 stuff except the drums which are still getting cut down. Soon the burners should be back on there.

I was saying to Silas on the phone how the timing of this couldn't have been more perfect. I just finished reading the History of the Cal-Look, and the stories of the original Californian clubs were fresh on my mind when we chatted.

It's an honor to join the club, thanks again.

yup...the numbers were of utmost importance so we could solidify our place in this tumultuous and unpredictable world or economic crisis and wheat & gluten free bread. plus...we'll have a great ensemble allready to rock when the 80's hair band craze makes it's resurgence. ;)

we're definately maxed out now...but we all agreed that this was the right thing to do.

Probably pretty close....They were a design by the automotive cartoonist Dave Deal. Did he have anything to do with the Batmobile? There were some models made from his concepts.

One web site says:
The Batmobiles were previously treated to a formerly 'rare' set of wheels called 'SINGLE RIBB I', made by a company called 'Radir'. Today, none of the Barris cars still wear them, but that may change as Radir is back, and the wheels have been re-issued! See their website at http://www.RadirWheels.com

Title: Re: Z
Post by: Bruce on March 12, 2010, 11:21:49 PM
Make sure you put extra rebar in the floor where the two supports for your hoist are.

When my buddy built his garage, he made up threaded anchor plates to set into the floor so he could tie down a car to pull it straight.  Easy to make.  You get some 1" NC nuts and weld 2-3 of them together to make a long nut.  Then weld that to a steel plate.  When the guys pour the floor, put them in place.  Lotsa rebar around them.

100A service?
Title: Re: Z
Post by: bwaz on March 13, 2010, 08:12:55 AM
I put rigid foam insulation panels under the rebar, and had that concrete with fibres added. I'm sure it's common practice, but I had small lines cut to take the stress and if there were going to be cracks they'd happen inside the cuts and not be visible. I have been really pleased with the results as far as cracking and reasonably warm (no heated floor).  I put in 200amp service, and break out 100 to send to the house for mine. I also used scissor trusses as I could only go so high up, and wouldn't have room in the attic for any real storage. The scissor trusses give you easily enough room to stand a sheet of plywood and move around and I can still hang garden furniture in the high points for the winter in the non work area. Make sure to wire for at least 20amp plugs so tools don't keep blowing breakers. The wire, breakers and outlets add a little more expense, but worth the trouble!

I used heavy poly and the rigid blue foam insulation (can't recall which order or how thick) and reinforcing mesh, the mesh gave us the bonus of being something to zip tie the heat tubing to so it wouldn't float up during the pour. It's also nice to have it in orderly, evenly spaced lines so you kinda know where it is if you ever need to drill a hole to anchor something down later ;)

If you went with scissor truss's for the first 5 - 6  trusses from the back you can put up a 10'-12'  loft with a 5'10" or so  loft ceiling height and have a 7' under loft height.  This is what i did in our 10' walled shop.  The extra storage is always needed, and I can almost stand up there.  You would need a wall under it, or a beam and 2 posts to support the floor.

We're using scissor trusses right across. Walls are 12'. We were contemplating some sort of Mezanine or loft. Great ideas.

Don't bring up the M word until all the inspectors have left and the permits are signed off. I made that mistake and the result was structural assessments, engineered plans, a second building permit during construction of the shop and a jump in my insurance.  :o
It seems too many people have whipped up quickie lofts in home and strata warehouse shops and then either they or the next tenant overloads them and someone/something gets crushed, so now they get the crap regulated out of them.

The end result is my little Mezzanine is now capable of supporting a knee deep layer of flywheels, but it bumped the cost of the shop by 1/3.

Because its not a bearing wall 2- 2x12 will work well there.  It looks like some of what you see is hidden behind the plywood.  Yup definitly add the mezz after the final inspection with no words mentioned to the inspector.  Thats a very nice size shop.  Kevin

It's 2 ply 2x8, with only the weight of a roof to support (not another floor) that's lots.
Title: Re: Z
Post by: vwboop on March 23, 2010, 01:28:24 PM
Actually what looks like a large doorway is a wall that hasn't been framed yet. Doors are 9X8 and 16X8.
Title: Re: Z
Post by: bwaz on March 23, 2010, 01:49:51 PM
Ah.... that explains it. I think when I did my garage with scissor trusses, I wanted as much space as possible and put 3- 2x12'' across the doors so I could use an "I-Drive" door opener that didn't require a centre chain or track. That way I only had the side tracks for the door and nothing in the middle. The door opener actually sits right on top of the door.  Looks good Chris, wish I had that height! (I make up for it in length)  :P

James Hardie siding. What's with Tyvek?
Title: Re: Z
Post by: Billyisgr8 on April 06, 2010, 07:22:47 AM
Tyvek is very airtight, it doesn't let the walls breath too well.  I have seen where slits are put into the tyvec to let the walls get better air ( I know doesn't make sence).  Walls need to breath to let the moisture out from the cooling and sweating they do between hot inside and cold outside.  A garage is not so bad like a house is, atleast it will hold the heat with the hardy siding too.

Wow,

Coming in late here.. great shop!!! :o

I wish I could:

1) afford to build that shop

2) get a permit to build that shop

3) buy a time machine (that is another story)

Very nice.
When is the opening party? :D :D

thanks trevor...i used a product called masterseries (an old vw builder from thesamba.com uses & sells it and there is some good info from him or in posts on thesamba.com...if you need info i'll dig it up). 2 coats of the masterseries primer/sealer and 3 of the masterseries gloss black chassis topcoat. all done by hand (foam roller, foam brush & bristle brush)...east van style! i didnt have the resources to spray it (compressor, gun, fresh air respirator) so it was a little time consuming...but i'm happy with the results. it's cheap, uv resistant and easy to touch up. time will tell how well it stands up!

From the photos it looks really nice and smooth. I'd say if it holds up it might be a nice alternative to a powder coated pan, which is great but like you say isn't always doable.

I'll dig that info up.

Did you buy iy locally or out of the USA?

hey trevor...sorry for not responding sooner...i know we've got the best powder coating guy in the area right here on these forums (russ @ francis andrew site furnishings)...but for this particular project i never considered powder coating the pan as an option.

i did however want to try something different. i know lots of people that have used por15, rustbullet, zero rust, ect with success...but when i started reading and learning more about masterseries and talking with chuck (the guy that sells  it) it made me want to give it a try. so...i would consider masterseries an alternative to those that dont want to use the other above mentioned products. like we've said...time will tell to see how well it holds up...but it looks pretty good right now (should have some more pics before the end of today ;))

when i was talking about resources...i meant for the application of the masterseries. my garage electrical cant handle a high amperage output for a compressor, and i dont have a fresh air resperator or a gun.

chuck is in conneticut. i got it shipped to blaine & went & picked it up there.

here are a few threads from thesamba.com (many more where they came from)...

What are the specs on your beam? Did you end up with alignment issues from the top shock tower mount to lower mount? Does that make sense?

Hey Silas,

What are the specs on your beam? Did you end up with alignment issues from the top shock tower mount to lower mount? Does that make sense?

Pan/Car looks great!!

hey mike...thanks!!

i'm pretty happy with the way the chassis turned out & it's holding up well! the rest of the car is kinda turd-like  ;), but it's mechanically sound & that's what i'm after!!

specs are as follows....2" narrowed beam with custom shock towers (all new material except for the use of og beam mounts), sway away adjusters, narrowed torsion bars & bugpack bushings built by dirtydeeds (derrick). i drilled & tapped holes and installed the grease zerks and narrowed the tie-rods. i also swapped out the allen head bolts that locate the adjusters to the torsion bars with a regular 6 point head bolt for ease of access (thanks to chris w. for the heads up). 2" narrowed sway bar. billet aluminum steering damper mount. 135's on stock 4x15 smoothies. no body mods or headlight bucket mods.

no alignment issues with the shock from the top to the bottom mount. it's close, and the shock is at a bit of an angle, but it clears & works. i put a washer on either side of the shock bushing (top & bottom) and sourced out some new top mounting bolts with correct grade & shoulder.

car rides pretty good and tracks well.

derrick builds top shelf s#!t and i highly reccomend his work!

Takes some getting used to. Silas was getting the hang of it.

Here's another short video of it. Front wheels come off the ground frequently so steering brakes (2 e-brakes - 1 for each side like a buggy) seem to be the main steering for it. Definitely takes some getting used to.

hi frank, i requested my beam be built without the steering damper mount so i ordered and installed one from moore parts...

http://www.mooreparts.com/store/product/1233/Steering-Damper-Mount/

it's aluminum tho, so dont tighten the mounting bolts too tight (ask me how i know)  ;)

hope that helps!  :)

it's a dark lit photo and old age has ruined my eyesight, so i was having trouble making out the character on the far right…but after lightening it and adding exposure in the editing room, i now see that it is none other than captain kevin collingwood…head of Zündfolge Sicherheitsdienste! so don't f with larry or his jacket or you'll be dealing with the captain!  ;)

Great lookin car, perfect stance!! I didn't realize this was the same car under the knife, I checked it out at last years show.

id like to know some more history on the trailer....what company made/sold em?
Title: Re: Z
Post by: Thomas on March 27, 2014, 09:48:33 AM
Josh there wasn't much left of the ID when I picked it up in Nanoose. The PO had it reg as a u build so I did the same. It had an Parksville RV dealer sticker on it and part of an old ID sticker. As far as I could make out it was made by a company called OK Industries LTD and it was made in 1977. I ran into a guy in Courtney one time and he said he help build them in Coombs back in the day. I looked at coping the trailer by making a mold as I have a lot of people who want one but I would have to sell about 6 to make my money back. I just don't have the time right now in my life to do this but may do in the future.

Awesome work on the beetle Thomas, you got a bus load of courage cutting the hole in.  I like the trailer too.  After I saw yours I was keeping my eyes open. Waiting at the boarder one day last year I saw a Goldwing pulling a trailer and I'm pretty sure that they had early beetle tail lights on it. The fenders rolled out a little away from the body.  Looked similar to a beetle ass end.  I would assume motorcycle trailers are roughly the same dimensions.  It looked similar to this.

bought new from Speedway Motors (old Victoria, BC, VW dealership) by Thomas' friends grandfather, built/customized by his friend in the early 80's, they cruised it in high school, his friend parked it in '88 and only drove it a few times since then, and now it's been recently brought back to life by Thomas!

great job! a true time capsule and an awesome machine!
