Aluminum Cases
« on: August 22, 2003, 08:41:57 AM »
Whats the word on these cases. It seems that my case is garbage as well so Im contemplating either aluminum or the stock case. I was talking to Bruce T at gcvws and he said their not necessary. A stock case will do. They are about the same price and I realize the aluminum is heavier, so whats the advantage? Thanks Brian

STRENGTH!  In most cases they are not needed as TW said BUT what is the reason for replacing your case? Alum cases will not need to be alignbored like a mag case, they are also more ridged and will not allow the case to spread. Lifter bores will not wear out like Mine, Allans and all others who run big lift cams and rockers.

The case will weigh 15lbs more but as i have now found replacing or repairing a case per season is a waist of money. In two years i have pounded out the lifter bore on two mag cases.

My .02$ worth.

Hey Geoff, the reason why I have to replace my case is because the case savers are leaking around #3 cylinder. Penguin has opened up this F#$%% motor 3 times already to fix it. There has got to be a crack around that area. So I figure while its out next year we will be going bigger and faster. Watch out Mike Lawless!

Hey 61, the motor is a bit of an oddball size, its 80mm crank, 94 mm p&c's. Get back to me and hopefully we can work something out. Thanx

Hi Red I will let you know what I'm going to do. I think I mite go with the aluminum case for my build up. I plan on building a motor with big power so the aluminum case mite be the way to go for me.

It depends on what you want to do my case will work no problem, but I plan on putting on a power adder. But if I stay with just running a motor then I will not need to go with the aluminum case I could stay with what I allready have. will see what happens let me know what you end up doing :D

Hi folks, I'm a bit of a newbie here so sorry if this sounds redundant. I'm contemplating building a car again & am in the process of trying to decide between a Beetle or a 914-but that's a whole different issue. Here's ny questions: At what point in engine size should I consider going with an aluminum case? Is it worth it to source out an original case & go from there/what are the pit falls of going with the original case? Are aluminum cases available for type 4 (in case I go with the 914)
Thanks for any help!
Leo

BkoolB3,
The T4 case is alum and that is one plus that it has over the T1 Mag case. There is no set standard as to when to go to a  alum case. If you run a turbo or power added that increases cyl PSI to a point where cyl studs atart to pull a alum case is the way to go.

I have had a few Mag cases get damaged from hard driving, if i had used a alum case i think this damage would not have happened. Most of all worn lifter bores, i had my mag case sleeved with alum so they will not wear out again.

You can go either way and have just as many happy miles from each. Some people want the peace of mind and or the cool factor of the alum case.

geoff.
