Type 3 Brakes Help Needed
« on: February 21, 2012, 04:52:17 PM »
Hello everyone

Looking for some help hopefully someone on the ASF can shed some light on this topic. I’m in the process of converting my rear brakes on my 61 beetle from stock to type 3 wide 5 brakes. That being said I have already the brake drums, backing plates, brake shoes, wheel cylinders, etc but what I don’t have is the spreader bars and e-brake lever from a type 3 to complete this conversion. My first question does anybody have the above parts I’m looking for? Or does anybody know of any options I may have to make this all work out. Will type 1 spreader bars and e-brake lever work? Are they the same as type 3?

Thanks for looking

Pretty sure the spreader bars are different due to the fact that the drums are larger.

I believe the spreader bars from the backing plates you probably already have wil work just fine. The backing plates are from a 68+ beetle if I remember correctly?

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

type 3 brakes have a different backing plate, wheel cylinders, spreader bar and hold down kit all to accommodate the wider shoe. type 1 backing plates wont work  because the adjustor stay is not spaced out from the plate far enough to match the cylinder, shoes would sit at a angle.
