depends on the speakers, a small 100w would work in many cases, but you need to look at what size your speakers are as well you need an amp that will be matched with the impedance of the output on your ipod.

some systems work on 8 ohms, some 4 ohms, some 2.5 ohms, the ohms ratings must match or you will have issues with levels, if your output rating is too high compared to the input rating of your amp then you could do some damage, I would not recommend trying to hook straight into an amp, you can pick up a simple deck with an aux input that will allow you to hook up mp3 players for cheap and this will work for an ipod then you wont need an amp.

32 ohms is more common with mp3 players and what not as it helps sustain battery life, car audio equipment is normally 4 ohms, this means you need a device to convert the signal to work with the amp. You can put a stereo deck anywhere, put it under your seat, they make all sorts of brackets for them as well.

If you need more info your probably going to have to google it.

Most car audio amps have an input impedance of 10,000 ohms, so your iPod will have no trouble driving an amplifier.
If the input impedance of your amp was indeed only 4 ohms, there is nothing on the market that would be able to drive this load.
What I am referring to is commonly called Line Level input & uses RCA connectors on both ends (Line-out on a Stereo Head Unit & Line-in on the amplifier).
In this case the line out is the headphone jack on your iPod (most headpones & earbuds present a 32ohm of higher load to the iPod).
The amplifier will present a 10K ohm load to the iPod, which it will have no problem driving.
You can get 1/8\" mini jack to RCA connector cables just for this purpose.
