heater channels

I was wondering if you can cut out the heater channels with the car sitting on the wheels or do you need to brace the car? Has anyone ever replaced them with something other than new heater channels?

If the body is still on the pan, you should be ok without any braces.

What else other than a new heater channel were you thinking of grafting in there?

I was just going to fab in sheet metal for strength.I just didn't want the car to collaps in the middle of the door frame.

Hi,
I'm new to this forum but just recently replaced a heater channel in my '62. I got the "Bug Me" DVD on heater channel replacement. On it  they show you how to put one in without lifting the body. Mind you it is more difficult. Mine went quite easy -  screw a brace on the inside of the door opening (door removed) between the A post and B post remove all the body bolts and jack up the body from inside the car under the dash. Get the DVD though it is well worth the $30.
