stroker crank on 1641?
« on: May 17, 2008, 10:06:57 AM »
A tech question:

What would be the benefits of putting a stroker crank in a 1641?  I have a friend who has suggested this as an great idea.  Also how would you compensate the piston rod and shim height doing this?  Does it warrent the effort in only a 1641?  I have read lots of people do this in larger motors.

Thanks for the help.

Not to take the wind from your wings (wow that rimes)

For what it is worth;

 I think it would be an experiment (probably done before)to stroke with 87. mm and a 76mm crank would get you something like an 1807cc. I understand that 74mm and 76mm cranks require you to use some spacers and some people discouraged me from going that route when i was planning my motor.Since you are opening the block and having it checked, it would make more sence to get 90.5mm (I have some f/s) or 94mm and get the block prep for it.

Thanks, sounds like a dumb question when asking it.  I have been trying to figure out crank specs 69, 74, 78, 82 ect.  I had done some reading and think I got an overview of it.  I have read in the vw magasines that the 1915 is an awesome motor. Probably sounds like a great way to go some time in the future.  I have  a dp with a power pulley, dual carbs on it with a port and polish.  I moves compared to my 1500 sp.  A good step up.  One day I will move the next step up.  Thanks for the help.

You could just take it apart and add a 74 crank and special cam (PM me) and it will make a 1760cc. The CB mileage motor is built that way and would be an easy way for you to get a bigger engine and do it in a weekend yourself.

Question on that.  I have the engle 100 in my car now.  1641 dp.  New motor rebuild with 5000 miles on it.  I like it but I have this friend who is a machinest and is big on me putting the stroker crank in it.  Can I use the engle 100 with a 74 crank?  Would a larger crank be better ie 78 or will it not run properly.  This would be a simple cost effective approach if it all fit together.  I am sure I would love the extra hp.  I bought this motor used so either it gets sold and I start over or I use this motor and balance, port and polish with the stoker.  Any thougths on the crank?  Engle 100 a good blend with the stroker crank?  I have a set of 34 pic dual carbs on it now could I use them.  They are the spainish ones.

Thanks again for the help.

Paul

You are getting involved.

Where you can go depends of what you want from the new engine. However, I think you can go up to 76mm before you have to get stroker pistons ( "B" pistons) Since you are oppening the case, you can change anything you want and the only limit will be your wallet.
