1835 and 120hp ?
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:39:17 PM »
Ok motor guys I need some help here. I'm building a retro cal-look 1960 type1 and I have most all the parts to build an 1835 including H-beam rods 044,044 heads engle 110 cam or 120 my choice. I will be running dual weber 40's or 44's is this still do-able? what will I need to make 120hp I was hoping to run 9.5:1cr to be able to still run pump gas.

Ok so after a little research I came to the conclusion I'm hoping for to much out of this little motor and still have a drivable car. So to add to the list the motor will have a 1:1 rocker ratio hi strength valve springs solid rocker shafts and I'm running the Engle W110 cam. Now with the Webber 40's and 9:1cr will I still see 105hp? this car has to be able to live on a rice diet.

Check out the article in the newest (March) Hot VW's about stroker motor building in the AIR TECH column by Steve Philips. Even if you don't agree with his style, the info's good to know.

105 H.P. is more than do-able if the engine is assembled properly, ( ie; proper deack height / combustion chamber volume )
and of corse proper head preparationand tuning....

1.1 Ratio rockers are stock ratio. perfect or an engle 110 cam, you can push the RPM a little higher with 1.25 Ratio rockers.
The 40mm carbs are the best choice here with a SVDA distributor ( not a 009 )

Unless you have the new AA thich wall 92mm pistons, be aware that the regular AA's and the Cima 92mm Barrels have the thinnest wall and are prone to overheat warpage. ( not the best choice for a daily driver )

Cheers

Brian thanks for the heads up on that column in Hot VW's it makes total cents. add a 82mm crank and turn it into a 2180 throw on the 44's with an engle w110 drop the comp to about 8.5:1 and there you are 115 ponies give or take? so does anyone have a cheap 82mm crank up for grabs? Darren thanks for your advice my buddies tell me I need to talk to you about machine work I will need done on the case for this little piggy.
