1.7L Vs 1.8L type 4 engines
« on: April 05, 2014, 11:04:14 AM »
Simply put: will a 1.8L bolt in where a 1.7 used to be? (I.e. interchangeable?)

I figured since the engines were VW, and I hadn't seen any similar postings, it wouldn't hurt to ask here. (If there are, just let me know)

I have a 1.8L that was out of a '74 bus and has a short type clutch plate on it. Mind you, I also have both the short and long bell housings for that engine if I need to use either. I'll just get the proper clutch plate type.

The 1.7L, that I also have, is currently sitting in a Porsche 914 and likely hasn't run for six or so years. We did manage to get it running enough to warm it up slightly. Then I noticed smoked blue out the exhaust. (bad piston rings or oil?) Eventually I'm going to be pulling it out of the car, either to see what needs to be fixed, or just swapping it with the other engine if its possible......

Yes, use the flywheel off the old motor (check endplay of course).
