Bug? Or Exon Valdese?
« on: June 25, 2003, 07:46:01 AM »
Being quite new to aircooled cars I'd just some of your sage advice on my oil leak problem.  I have a 67 Beetle with a 1600 dual port engine that is running a single solex.  The engine is stock.  Seems that after I patched the holes in my push rod tubes the oil started pouring out of the valve covers, which previously were tight & clean.  after much fiddling with the shape of the bail wire, hammering the valve covers and even using liquid gasket & making a big mess.  I then found different valve covers & new seals.   They continued to leak, but with a significant improvement.

I cleaned all the surfaces before each atempt at re-assembly.  The engine is running 10w30 at this time.  Also the breather on the neck of the oil fill stem is clear & seems to do its job.  I have been told to check my case breather lines.  How would I go about doing that? Those are the lines running back into the intake manifold correct?  I think I may be getting blowpast? possible?  The oil was quite literally Spraying out from the bottom of the valve covers when the leak started.  So there is quite a  bit of pressure.

Sounds like you may even have just too much oil in the motor. I know this sounds too simple but check the level of oil on the dip stick. There should only be enough to come to the top line and no more.
You can also take the oil cap off while the eng is running and place your hand over the hole, If you feel a lot of air pumping out it could be as you said getting blow by.

If you would like to call us at the shop we would be glad to help over the phone.

thanks Geoff I'll try that!  I checked the oil level, during my \"trials\" I always kept it around 1/8\" below the \"full\" line.  I should be getting the bug thru the inspection within a week I'll drop by that extra pitch welt for you then as well.
