« on: September 06, 2011, 10:58:24 AM »
Need to get my type 3 wide 5 drums machined down for the shorter 71 bug irs axles. Where's a good place to take em? Anyone know the exact amount to take off? Thx, Mark

okay, depending on what axles you have and backing plates ect. offset spring plates or not,
Rough guess is about 1/2 inch off the snout.

The number parrotted about the interweb is 5/8".
I've been meaning to gather the parts together to measure the actual difference in mm, but haven't gotten around to it.

Bruce, are you referring to control arm shortening? I read on the Steeringboxscraper site thread (not Samba) about IRS that 3/4" per arm needs to be cut out.

Which is close enough to 5/8" I guess. ;)

Control arm?  I thought we were talking about the brake drum?

Control arm?  I thought we were talking about the brake drum?

i put em together and it looks like they wont need to be machined.

however . . . . . . ive got the problem of my type 1 irs control arms being pushed out too far due to the wider torsion housing on a type 2. so, having read lots of steeringboxscrapers

http://www.steeringboxscrapers.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2774

i have to decide whether to narrow my torsion housing (nah), find longer axles (no luck), or shorten the control arms. on page 5/6 of the above thread, i read that 3/4" is the recommended amount to shorten them by.
