How much paint?
« on: January 25, 2010, 10:52:18 PM »
How much single stage urethane can I expect to buy to cover a '59 beetle? Inside and out. Fenders, deck lid, hood and all. Will a gallon cover it?

I used just over a half gallon for outside surfaces only, and inside the doors.

Is single stage urethane still available?  I thought it was to be all gone by the end of 09.  If it is still available, what brands are still out there?

Just curious as I have a couple of jobs to do in the spring.  Thanks.

Not even close.

When I painted my car inside and out with single stage acrylic enamel, I needed 1 3/4 gallons.

Thanks Dave. The stuff i was looking at mixed out to 1-1/2 gallons of paint after reducer and hardner. It might be tight. This is the stuff I was looking at.

Any other experiences out there?

After Bruce's post I went back and checked my invoice.

Indeed I was sold a full gallon, not the 3/4 I thought it was. I probably had shy of a 1/4 left.

So yeah, you're going to need over a gallon :)

That reminds me about my Mexican paint job 3 years ago.  Exterior only, plus inside of the front hood and spare tire well took close to 7/8 of a gallon.  Single stage acrylic enamel.

How much you need can be partly determined buy the color or the colors ability to cover the primer. I could see yellow, whites and some reds using abit more given that most manufacturers have cut out most if not all lead from their paint lines. I would say a color with average hiding you should be safe with 6 ltrs...depending on the mixing ratio you could have up to 9 ltrs of sprayable product!
For anyone who's wondering about being able to buy single stage paints this year....you should be able to get it. Manufacturers and retailers will be able to sell till the end of 2010. They will not be able to order new stock after July so, if they run out of one toner needed to make a color after July....you won't be getting a mix.
Anyway, most paint manufactures have or will have VOC compliant single stage lines available by that time. They might just a little different to spray than whatever you are used to....still will be fine tho.
Our world won't come to an end just yet.....however....there are people working on it!
