Oh ya, it's getting the treatment but I need to do an out of province inspection first before the narrowed beam and stuff goes in it. I'm working on getting rid of the salmon red color to get down to the original ultra marron. Hey Brian it's an early 55 so it came with eggs and semaphores so its not really a euro model. In mid 55 the went with snowflakes and bullets. This is a rare model made for only 6 months. Kind of special like a 67. It's got the original seat material underneath those blue seat covers but until I pass the inspection I don't want to look in case they are torn. It has not been hit other than a little fender bump here and there and the original foors and no rust. It's a very solid project and it will make a nice driver. I just have to see how the pinkish paint comes off to run it as patina...

Hmmm, I don't know about that. I thought Canadian cars went directly to egg lights in the 55 model year, bullets and no semaphores. I read semaphores went through to the 60's in europe. I only know because I had an early Canadian delivered 55, it had eggs and no semaphores, ribbed doors and single tip exhaust pipe. I'd still say it's a euro. Got a birth certificate?

interesting/confusing time for tail lights & turn signals fo sho!

if it's all og, it looks like geoffs egg & semi oval could be either a us, canada or guam delivered car…

Quote
**All 1954-1955 European Beetles were outfited with "heart" taillights.

**All Oct'54 (chassis # 1-0722915) - Mar'55 U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars used the red convex plastic lens taillights. All of these cars had semaphore directional indicators.

**April'55 - May 2, 1955 (chassis # 1-0871206) U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars, there are two possibilities. Your car could have the red convex plastic lens taillights and semaphores,
or it could have the optional flashing turn signal package with the larger glass taillights and "bullet" style front flashing directional indicators.

**May 3, 1955 (chassis # 1-0871207) - July'55 (chassis # 1-0929746) U.S., Guam, and Canadian market cars were equipped with the flashing indicator package as standard equipment. So, this car would have the larger glass taillights and "bullet" style front directional indicators.

Thanks Silas for posting what I was going to have to explain. This pinkish oval I was made in Dec 54. Im trying to strip the coral red color off using easy off and steel wool to get to the original maroon color like on the dash. I have found that the original paint is very thin. Is this normal?

The upholstery under the seat covers are the original ones plus even under the door panels but until the vehicle inspection is done I don't want to remove them in case they are ripped or holed.

fabric or the red Vinyl? My old 55 had fabric and was sweet! I guess being the deluxe? Not sure if the standards had vinyl? Need the time travel machine to go back and see these things in the showroom! ;)

This pinkish oval I was made in Dec 54

I think your car is a 54. vw didn't change to the build date/model year thing until aug '55 (example...aug '55 built vw = '56 model year)(dec '54 built vw = '54 model year).

you've cross referenced your vin with the vin charts, correct? built before vin 1-0781 884 = '54!

I tried removing that pink paint today using only water and 0000 steel wool and it still took off the original paint. I don't think I can run this one as a patina any more. :smiley_confused1:

Hey Geoff just a shot in the dark but what about a heavy cut compound polish and polisher at low speed like 1000-1200 rpm and have a water bottle on hand to keep the heat down. what else have you got to lose? give me a call if you need a hand getting started. my polisher shit the bed but I have everything else your gonna need to try it.

I'm using 0000 steel wool and acetone and using less pressure. The red paint is coming off better now and I'm not burning thru.
