So the latest update is long overdue.

Finally put in a roll bar. This comes with a lot of thanks to a few people. First goes to Fred (Flat4) for hooking me up with the main hoop and rear bars. Well worth the drive to see Fred and Tonya! Second thanks goes to Harold and crew at California Rod & Custom in Aldergrove for helping me out with space and time and all the great skills used to put this roll bar together. Here are some pics of the roll bar

Feel much better in the car now. In fitting the roll bar I had to lower the seat down to give me clearance for my big head. Being so low in the car is an odd feeling. Heres a pic to give you an idea of the height!

So on GCVWS weekend I learned a whole lot about running nitrous.....

Like how the car doesnt go when the bottle is empty, and how it doesnt go when you bend the full throttle switch and that nitrous is fun when its all working! Tried an easy launch at the end of the night with the nitrous engaged and pulled off a 110mph pass which was one of my goals for the year.

Thanks to Alan U for the pictures, I finally clued into the fact my cars suspension was hurting me (or at least I suspect so) so today I swapped out the stock torsion bars for some 28mm bars and lowered the back end of the car a bit and I raised up the front, seeing as the tires were rubbing when I would turn off the track. The stance looks better and in my quick pass around the block it feels alright. And some pics to see the difference in stance. Not the best comparison, but should give you an idea. Also have some new shocks coming for the back to help reduce the bounce back

If all goes well at test & tune today then I will hopefully be out for the supershifters weekend coming up.

New best ET 12.110 @ 109.22 MPH

Got my 60 ft times in to the 1.6's but ran into some clutch problems and then ended the day with a broken head stud!

Way to go Chris, breaking parts is all part of the fun of lowering the et's. Going 10mm studs next time, or were these 10mm already?

It has been a while....

Moved and dont have my own garage anymore but am trying to get one built.
In the meantime, Shane and Amanda have allowed me to move into the shop and start working on my car! Thank you!!!

So today, pulled the motor out and began the first rebuild ever and the repairs from last years breakage.

This is what stopped me last year, snapped off a head stud. Upon the tear down I did find pieces of a valve spring and that was confirmed with a visit to Darren's this afternoon

I split the case, no excess wear on the cam bearings, nothing looks out of place. I snapped pics of the lifters, after six years of track only use it appears they have some pitting/flaking

There will be a few upgrades this year, going to a 86C cam to try and get more out of the nitrous, upgrade the valve springs, more suspension work and some other goodies.

I may be naive about drag race engines, or maybe aircooled engines in general, but those lifters look pretty beat up for how many miles are on your motor. Is it the high revs and lack of cooling that causes that?

I suspect the wear, which appears more cosmetic than anything, is from a bit of float due to weak springs. So bigger springs it is!

Thanks to Darren for the case saver and install as well as the many pointers and tips on my rebuild and upgrade.

Im getting excited about this year at the track.

valeve float can lead to some of this wear but too heavy of springs will do the same by squeezing the thin layer of oil of the head of the lifter.

The wear you see is very common on high performance engines and even some stock engines when you run Scat/ Web lifters (among others)
The low zinc in todays oild play a big roll as well. Breaking in the cam and lifters on single springs is a good way to prolong the life but on race engines that only see the track this isn't done very often as cams and lifters get changed often during a season. Flaking lifters have been a big problem the past 10 years maybe more. Steel tool or schubek lifters are the best you can buy and allow you to swap cams without changing lifters as they do not wear (although there was a bad batch of steel tool lifters a couple years ago)

Those pics are typical of Scat lifters.  The problem is the lifters themselves.  Don't use Scat and you'll likely be OK.

 It's not just Scat.
I pulled my 1835 apart and it was built in 1989 with german lifter and they looked just the same as well as we used to regrind orig lifters for use with HP cams and also saw some with this issue. I know Scat lifters appear to have more issues as I think they were a popular choice in the HP world until people started pulling engines apart and posting on the web.

I've sent back MANY MANY sets to scat over the years (while working at CIP) thats the reason I went to shubeck... $$$ but better in the long run.

If anyone is looking AlanU may have some of the Udo tool steel lifters as well.

They are not Scat lifters. Web with a Web Cam.
