Title: 61 Project Strip Car
Post by: Chris on April 23, 2005, 04:37:46 PM
So a long time ago I started to build a car and it sat for a long time as I didnt have time to do it, it rotted, rusted and was eventually useless, then someone (Shane) called me up and sais he had a deal for me, a 61 shell, complete, rust free and straight. I said ok, and so started my project again.

I have recently mounted the tranny and reinstalled the spring plates and axle tubes, which were powdercoated thanks to Russ at Frances Andrew Site Furnishings (http://www.francesandrew.com/), great job too! I am just waiting for some brake parts to come back from the machine shop and should have a complete rolling pan in the next ten days or so.

Anyway check out the pics here! (http://www.1976bus.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=17) or click the link in my signature line!  :D

Spent the day installing the front disc brakes and drop spindles, other than a quick parts run to Airspeed it was an easy install. There are some new pics in my gallery, I am hoping to have it rolling on its own 4 wheels this week :) Just waiting for some rear drums to be machined and I have to find a drivers side back plate for the rear.

So a little update on my project, this evening I installed all the rear brake lines and cylinders, fit the line in to the front, waiting on a dual circuit master cylinder before I can fit the front brakes and the line lock. Also managed to mount the motor to finish building it, last major thing to do is fit the push rods and setup the rocker geometry. I have added some new pics. Thanks to Danny for taking care of the drums and custom machining some shock tower mounts to run the CE shocks. Looking forward to having this rolling soon. Just trying find some good pictures of an early pedal assembly, I cant quite get it to work right, I am sure that I am missing something?! Anybody have a few good close ups they can send me?

Updated pics! (http://www.1976bus.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=17)

What's the prob. with the pedal assembly? The brake master cylinder plunger the wrong length? I have a couple at home I will snap some pics tonight if you like?

Just not sure how to put it all together, the one I previously had was hacked together and it has been apart for almost 2 years so I dont remember how it goes.

How do you get the brake lines to fit through the rubber grommets? (There's 2, one at the front of body by pedal assembly and the rear one where it exits the car).

The rubber opening is 1/2 the size of the brake line 'bolt'.

I cut the brake line in half and then glued it back together........

I was able to make a mark on my calendar today as the day I rolled my rebuilt pan out the door!

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2297.JPG&hash=00fa9015109aa8bd74fa07501b05ea9aa9f658e6)

Not the best picture, but there is more in my gallery

61 Project Gallery (http://www.1976bus.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=17)

All that is left to do on the pan is, run one more brake line to the right front wheel, install pedal assembly and replace tie rod boots and do rough alignment. It was nice to roll it out into the sun.

The week after the long weekend the motor comes out and goes to Darren Krewenchuk for rocker setup!

Thanks to all the guys at Airspeed for the help!

So today marked a couple huge leaps in progress the first being getting my longblock over to Darren K to setup my rocker geometry, thats about the only I did not want to do on this engine build, and as per Darren I will have the motor back this weekend! So I am stoked!

And the second big accomplishment!

Thanks to James and Brian for coming out tonight to help me get the shell on! :)

It has been a while since I managed an update on my website or here regarding my car but here goes!

Even though I was not posting updates and was busy working with the club getting the show together I still managed to get some work done on my car, as most of you that came out to the Show n Shine would have seen.

The latest work I have been doing is the electrical, all new, everything, ignition, fuel pump, line lock, everything electrical is new. I installed a new wiring harness, using the universal harness and then modifying for my purpose, I picked up a MSD Digital 6 Plus and installed that, wiring in the line lock switch for the rev limiter, I chose to use the Bosch 009 with a Pertronix Ignitor II module, and I have not decided what coil I am going with, going to be using MSD Plug Wires. I used a Porsche 914 tach and fit it into the speedo hole in the dash, I wired in an oil idiot light behind the dash that will light up the hole dash! Try to make it annoyingly obvious if there is a problem, still trying to figure out where to mount my oil temp/pressure guage cluster.

The only thing that sucks is that I am leaving town for a month for work, stupid work that helps buy stuff for my car, so I wont be able to get much done, I figure if I was home for another week I could have my car running for Seattle, but I wont be going :(

Anyway I have some more pics on my website. PHOTO ALBUM (http://www.1976bus.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=17)

right on, chris. looking good.

i know what you mean when you speak of the frustration of not being able to work on your car. mine is collecting another layer of dust as i type this. sometimes there are more important thing to take care of tho. one thing is for sure, the car will still be there when you get back.  ;)

So made some major progress after doing nothing for so long, I have just about completed all the modifications to accomodate the tranny raise that came with the tranny from Jim.  Check out my website for pics (http://www.1976bus.com) I had to cut the tunnel and parcel tray, weld in a midmount, raise the cooling shroud in the engine bay (just cut it for now, will finish this tomorrow) and then in goes the tranny, adjustable spring plates, and install the brakes again.

Looks great Chris,

With that solid mid mount do you mount the nose cone at all?
Title: 61 Project Street Strip Car
Post by: Chris on November 11, 2005, 09:51:44 PM
nope, with a standard mid mount I think you can, but this is a raised tranny so you would have to buy the raised tranny nose mount, but theres no point this should be enough to hold.

So after almost a months wait I finally managed to get some work done on the car, picked up hte remaining components for the front suspension like ce drag shocks, and the parts to fit the ball joint shocks to my link pin front end.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2607.JPG&hash=a9e0c0e75257fdeb0f877e5b6b49b247198dae97)

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2604.JPG&hash=57e05494444fcf2493c5ab5d043e8ab6c2563daf)

Also got the 135's that James gave me mounted on my 4.5 fuchs, btw dont use crappy tire in langley for anything, they scratched my rims and told me it never happened and that I didnt know what I was talking about. And I test fit a fender, went on easy and straight, so I think I have really lucked out on the body with this one....

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2608.JPG&hash=e2079d94b86d4c9e2bfdd3995c7b604b0c342591)

Next to be done is the drag bar installation, Turbo Jim @ Airspeed custom built the drag bar to accomadate the tranny raise kit that I am using, also I will have to rewire most of my electrical as I have to relocate it to fit the drag bar, just waiting on some plated hardware for the rear end to finish the tranny install.....

So today I dropped my engine tin, brake parts and other small parts to Russ for powdercoating! Midnight blue is the colour of choice and based on previous things coated by Russ I am excited to see the results, I must however stop changing my mind on how this car will be put together otherwise it will never get done.

My latest frustration is that the doors have been modified by the previous owner to fit one piece windows, this I am unhappy about as one piece windows just dont do it for me. So I am on the hunt for a nice set of doors complete with all the tracks for the vent windows.

I was going to look at going turbo but James bought all the HotVW's mags with the article on turbocharging 1914's so I am lost. Not.

Hey Dude, The car will be awsome....just keep pushing forward. I know set backs like the doors are frustrating but you have to enjoy the building process....sometimes it's good and sometimes it's bad. when I was building my green car(the Hulk) I had a mint set of doors and the blaster wrecked them and I not only had to find other doors but got screwed on the money I put out for the blasting. What I am trying to say is the green cars doors are full of bondo............................Just kiding Shane    :P  I had a fun time looking for doors but you just have to forget about it and move on. Im thinking of going with an original 61 blue, I have looked them up and quite like one, I just forget what one it was, it is lighter though. I just like the look of this blue on the brakes and engine tin.

Spent some more time on it today, fixed my rocker stud problem, thanks to Darren K for the supplies and assistance. I fit my new header and test fit everything else with the tranny raise in, lots of room left.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2674.JPG&hash=4792cea0bf2e48c2bbce9a5370294bc767575c8f)

So yesterday I got the shelves welded into the engine bay and re did the piece I welded into the parcel tray to cover the tranny nose, I needed more room for the brake line.

I went from this

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2602.JPG&hash=5dc060f8cd130d83f8c112193925b702bd087a61)

To this

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2681.JPG&hash=f7bc1751e1db8ebb1fdb444fb02aecda14080dd2)

I changed it for one, because the welds were bad, I was just to half assing it, and it had no finish, it just looked like a cover up. I will have to modify the rear seat a little more than expected but thats ok. I plan to give the engine bay a coat of primer and some paint today seeing as the shelves are in as well as install the fuel line from front to rear.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2678.JPG&hash=750d8ceb1e3b0336fe6ed8a4cc84b9855ea73030)

Its coming along nicely, and I hope to fire it up soon, need to buy som AN fittings for the fuel lines, fuel filter and pressure guage and I have to replumb my oil cooler lines. Maybe even bleed the brakes. Stay tuned!

Well thanks Geoff, it will be a roller by the weekend, just need to bleed the brakes!

As MArty was asking, the colour I am thinking of going with is L390 Gulf Blue. I believe this is a good representation of the colour, someone correct me if I am wrong.

I finally got a proper header to work with the tranny lift, its the A1 header and magnaflow muffler that Jimmy was running on the rusto-cal prior to the rebuild! Nice setup, low enough to clear the rear apron properly with some minor mods, and the muffler tucks very nicely under the rear fender.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_HPIM2682.JPG&hash=cacc2336907f325779b0280f05fae438391a35f8)

I tacked in some tin to cover the orginal cutouts for the peashooters and then I cut out the center to accomodate the header, I think it looks good. Next step is fuel lines in the engine bay. I have installed a new hard fuel line from the front to rear, and will be installing a pressure guage at the rear along with some AN lines.

Gulf blue   Thats the color I picked for my 61'
Do a search for the color on the samba there's lots of pictures in different light. I spent the $20 to have a rattle can mixed so I could see the color in person. I was torn between sea blue and gulf blue but after seeing the colors we still liked the gulf.

Finally some more work done on the car, installed the front fenders after welding in some new nutserts and then I put on all 4 wheels and rolled it outside, thats a first in a long time, was kinda nice.

The last pic is a little blurry, the batteries were dying, but I love the stance, I wont be installing hte rear fenders until I have all the electrical, oil lines, and fuel lines sorted out. But its still moving along.

Well its been a couple months since I updated this....

Here is the latest.

Jimmy from Airspeed came over and gave me some help with the fuel lines and built a kit for me that included a holley red fuel pump, a regulator, filter, shut off valve for the tank and all the push lock AN fittings I needed. Thanks Jimmy. I think he has dual carb kits available at Airspeed now if you like the setup.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_IMG_0233.JPG&hash=b51d3d8d07c704013c64b2386eb16002955a9106) (https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_IMG_0236.JPG&hash=cb4fcce3ae00dce391eb11c005833f8b9dff1a9a)

Also I completed a bunch of electrical work, got the headlights wired in, and started rewiring the MSD and other components.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_IMG_0229.JPG&hash=bee8e427011ca9f3dce1d8d52097be318e6e6030)

I installed a set of city lights for parking lights. Today I finished off by installing the rear fenders, repop's are not the best choice for alignment but im not too worried about that right now, thanks to Bullyboy for getting the picture and measurements for the position of the taillights. I think I got it right! So everything looks to fit ok with all the modifications from the tranny raise, the muffler and header clear everything very well.

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_IMG_0243.JPG&hash=0df4157d58fcf2aa5ac69e1885cc88bb417c74dc)

That's it for now, the push is on! I need to get the breather lines in and mount the fuel pump up front and then get the windows in and finish wiring, if I can keep up this pace I will be on the track soon!

Another first today!

The car actually moved under its own power out to the road, down turn around and back into the driveway.

Still having trouble with the carbs. I took them apart and soaked them, blew out all the passages and jets, the mains are too big but I have to wait for some.

The car finally idles, at what RPM I am not sure as I still havent replaced my 914 tach, but its not idling too high. Doesnt break 170 F so its cooling well. It looks sweet with the CE pulleys and broach that Airspeed has. Im happy it moves, that is a good sign. Hopefully Jason (slammedbus) is able to bring the doors down with him this week then they can on.

Need to do some tuning on those carbs but sort of a wasted effort until I have all the proper jets. I am still using Geoff's emulsion tubes and mains, thanks.

Thats about it.

Well back to the grind, car is dismantled, engines out, tranny is almost out and ready to go for a rebuild.

All the electrical is being redone, I am not happy with how it turned out, so I am doing it again.

Got a new in dash tach, changing all the guages to Autometer Pro Comp

Decklid is being converted to a vert lid, hood will be getting changed or reworked to straighten it out.

Rear apron will be converted to a quick release.

New taller intake manifolds being match ported.

Looking at taller Velocity stacks, found a cool billet set with screens and may invest in those.

And I need to drill out my rotors and drums to convert them to press in studs.

Other than that, its ready to go.

So as I posted in the tech thread I have a bunch of changes to do on the car this season.

Essentially taking the car out of street/strip category and in to the strip only category.

Once my new camera arrives, and I am done taking pictures of Brian's wife, I will start updating this thread again.

Ha, no pics yet, however the tranny is out and going for a spool tomorrow, motor is out and going for some updates as well. Still no finalizing on a cage.

My to do list is as follows -

- New fuel cell
- Battery Shutoff Switch
- Spool for tranny
- up the compression on the motor
- oil cooler upgrade
- staging brake
- some electrical updates

How is everyone else coming along with there projects this year?

So here is where the car is at now....

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2FDrag%2520Bug%2Fnormal_IMG_1730.JPG&hash=dfafce21f0236e659fdea15ad15b5e71d8fbcbd7)

From my last list I managed to get the fuel cell and spool in, fixed my electrical issues and removed the oil cooler, removed all the factory cooling and stripped it down to a strip car only.

So whats left is getting in the new hardware for the wheels, install the carbs. I did a full rebuild with new shafts and misc items. A few more weeks to go before I can get out there but will likely do a test and tune first.

Well I never got around to straightening the T-bars, so I will just take them off....

Anyway, the carb rebuild and the upgrade to the magnasparkII distributor made a huge difference yesterday at the track. I was able to pull off several 12 second passes and with taking temperature/humidity/barometer factors in to consideration I had what turned out to be a very consistent day.

I love the racing :)

So the latest update is long overdue.

Finally put in a roll bar. This comes with a lot of thanks to a few people. First goes to Fred (Flat4) for hooking me up with the main hoop and rear bars. Well worth the drive to see Fred and Tonya! Second thanks goes to Harold and crew at California Rod & Custom in Aldergrove for helping me out with space and time and all the great skills used to put this roll bar together. Here are some pics of the roll bar

Feel much better in the car now. In fitting the roll bar I had to lower the seat down to give me clearance for my big head. Being so low in the car is an odd feeling. Heres a pic to give you an idea of the height!

So on GCVWS weekend I learned a whole lot about running nitrous.....

Like how the car doesnt go when the bottle is empty, and how it doesnt go when you bend the full throttle switch and that nitrous is fun when its all working! Tried an easy launch at the end of the night with the nitrous engaged and pulled off a 110mph pass which was one of my goals for the year.

Thanks to Alan U for the pictures, I finally clued into the fact my cars suspension was hurting me (or at least I suspect so) so today I swapped out the stock torsion bars for some 28mm bars and lowered the back end of the car a bit and I raised up the front, seeing as the tires were rubbing when I would turn off the track. The stance looks better and in my quick pass around the block it feels alright. And some pics to see the difference in stance. Not the best comparison, but should give you an idea. Also have some new shocks coming for the back to help reduce the bounce back

If all goes well at test & tune today then I will hopefully be out for the supershifters weekend coming up.

It has been a while....

Moved and dont have my own garage anymore but am trying to get one built.
In the meantime, Shane and Amanda have allowed me to move into the shop and start working on my car! Thank you!!!

So today, pulled the motor out and began the first rebuild ever and the repairs from last years breakage.

This is what stopped me last year, snapped off a head stud. Upon the tear down I did find pieces of a valve spring and that was confirmed with a visit to Darren's this afternoon

(https://airspeedparts.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F1976bus.com%2Fgallery%2Falbums%2Fssproject%2Fnormal_014.JPG&hash=4c7760ab69729b3f42766c33fe7ebaf0dc5d4ff4)

I split the case, no excess wear on the cam bearings, nothing looks out of place. I snapped pics of the lifters, after six years of track only use it appears they have some pitting/flaking

There will be a few upgrades this year, going to a 86C cam to try and get more out of the nitrous, upgrade the valve springs, more suspension work and some other goodies.

I may be naive about drag race engines, or maybe aircooled engines in general, but those lifters look pretty beat up for how many miles are on your motor. Is it the high revs and lack of cooling that causes that?

I suspect the wear, which appears more cosmetic than anything, is from a bit of float due to weak springs. So bigger springs it is!

Thanks to Darren for the case saver and install as well as the many pointers and tips on my rebuild and upgrade.

Im getting excited about this year at the track.

valeve float can lead to some of this wear but too heavy of springs will do the same by squeezing the thin layer of oil of the head of the lifter.

The wear you see is very common on high performance engines and even some stock engines when you run Scat/ Web lifters (among others)
The low zinc in todays oild play a big roll as well. Breaking in the cam and lifters on single springs is a good way to prolong the life but on race engines that only see the track this isn't done very often as cams and lifters get changed often during a season. Flaking lifters have been a big problem the past 10 years maybe more. Steel tool or schubek lifters are the best you can buy and allow you to swap cams without changing lifters as they do not wear (although there was a bad batch of steel tool lifters a couple years ago)

Those pics are typical of Scat lifters.  The problem is the lifters themselves.  Don't use Scat and you'll likely be OK.

 It's not just Scat.
I pulled my 1835 apart and it was built in 1989 with german lifter and they looked just the same as well as we used to regrind orig lifters for use with HP cams and also saw some with this issue. I know Scat lifters appear to have more issues as I think they were a popular choice in the HP world until people started pulling engines apart and posting on the web.

I've sent back MANY MANY sets to scat over the years (while working at CIP) thats the reason I went to shubeck... $$$ but better in the long run.

If anyone is looking AlanU may have some of the Udo tool steel lifters as well.

They are not Scat lifters. Web with a Web Cam.

Web lifters are Scat lifters. Web buys them from Scat and will only warrenty their cams if you buy their Web/Scat lifters.

I figured that was the response I would get.
