Shipping classic vehicle to the US
« on: February 10, 2018, 07:46:31 AM »
Has anybody sold a Canadian vehicle to a US purchaser?
Pretty vague information online, mostly to do with late model cars.
Thanks!

Yes. Done it twice. It all depends on the year of the car and then weather or not the vehicle was also manufactured for us regulations.

For my brothers 1963 beetle, the guy just needed the title of the car (signed of course) which  the border guards checked against the vin.. He paid the tax according to the ap9 (vehicle transfer form) as well as the bill of sale and then he was off!

For my 1998 gti the owner needed a letter from VW of America with the vin number stating that the vehicle met all safety and crash regulations in the us and then again he was able to take the signed registration, bill of sale and transfer form to the border. He paid the duty and was on his way.

It’s much more difficult importing into Canada.

Is the purchaser local or is the car being shipped far away.

If it's going to Washington state/Oregon and the new owner can come to the border it's a piece of cake, if the purchaser cannot it would be handled through a broker but also not difficult

When the car is 25 years old or older, it does not have to meet DOT regulations.
A VW made in Germany will need duty paid.

Thanks for all of the information.
It's a 60's GM. The inquiry is from Louisiana.

Duty needs to be paid?

I know when bringing a car from the USA to Canada there is no duty of over 25 years old. Is this not true going the opposite way?

I had to pay taxes based off of the purchase price on both of my beetles I imported from Washington state.
