944 Brakes

Who's done them before? I was at the swap at Franklins today, and got to thinkin (like I do) on the drive home. I'm looking close to $2000 for front and rear brake set -up with the wilwood calipers and 944 rotors. Has anyone built a kit themselves? or is it something better left to buying from a guy that has done it a thousand times??

Matt, I did a rear 944 conversion on a beetle (IRS) back in 1991. It's very simple bolt on but you will need to custom make the e brake cable....fairly easy. It will push the wheels out, I think it was close to a inch per side?

Now that changes everything. I don't have an inch to spare back there. back to the drawing board....

i've checked out the website (vdubcustoms) and they have a few options.

not sure if this works for you or how expensive it would be but....

I thought about using their newer vw 5x100 brake kit on the front and a CB performance rear brake kit with blank rotors. it could solve the spacing and ebrake cable issue.

food for thought.

My plan as of right now, (which will probably change half a dozen times by the time I get to the rear brakes) is to use the aftermarket rear disc set-up and the stock disc front end. It won't be as cool as a set of dual piston wilwood calipers, but it will stop the car.

Matt, I've had discs all around on my car since 92.  The front is stock Ghia solid discs, the rear is stock 914 solid discs.  This provides more braking than you could ever need in any VW.

Only once did these brakes not provide the braking I needed.  At the time I had probably 1000 lbs of cargo in the car.  All I will say is that there was no damage done at that time.

On top of your stock T3 discs, just add the solid rear disc kit Airspeed sells.  This is virtually identical to what I have and will save you big $$$$.  Not the sexy red calipers or slotted rotors, but all you need.

Consider that with our cars the rear weight bias is about 60-65%.  Everyone has heard the saying that the front brakes do most of the braking.  Not as much with our cars.  We can afford to have much bigger rear brakes than any front engine car, and really use those rear brakes.  The result is that properly setup, a Bug with 4 wheel discs can stop better than almost all new cars made today.

Go over to the German Look web site and spend some time in the brake section.  They won't even let you in the door unless you have stock 944 vented discs all around.  Then they advocate bigger 944 Turbo brakes.  They don't stop there, some idiots go for 928S4/944 Turbo S brakes.  All it is, is a competition where they are saying, \"my penis is bigger than yours\".

Don't get caught up with that stupidity where all they are doing is adding massive amounts of rotating weight to their cars.

i'm using 1986 944 turbo calipers and rotors front and back on my 69 beetle  And I think its the best mod I've done to the car!

I've definitly lost 5-10hp because of the weight but my big 911 rims don't help either.

front
-cb dropped spindles modified by vdubcustoms
-944 hubs modified by vdubcustoms
-and the rest bolted on

rear
-using 86 944 aluminum control arms
-everything bolts up

stock master cylinder, a little more travel then i like in the pedal, but works awesome together with the 944T brakes

oh ya here's some pics

http://community.webshots.com/album/135915450EjRtuC

The car feels way safer with these, I had the normal solid disc setup front and back before and wasn't happy at all with them.

And the conversion cost about $2000
-$700 for rotors and pads
-$350 for vdubcustoms to modify my hubs and spindles (nice work)
-$700 for calipers(ebay) and ebrake cables
-$250 for aluminum rear arms

Time to bump an old topic

Does anyone have experiance with these calipers?

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?Prod...C26%2D615%2D510

I was thinking of doing a 4 piston caliper upgrade on factory rotors for the front and using the aftremarket rear disk for the rear. I understand what Bruce said earlier but I just cant help but think with the heavier motor, not to mention the larger displacement, I'm installing in the notch that I need to upgrade the brakes as well.

Any thoughts?
